Basil’s Ch5 backstory (basil-the-splinters) reveals she is Rosemary au Lepus — the lost Hare-clan daughter, kidnapped by Oba and implanted into a family of Tortles to erase her identity. ⇒
The Tortle family that hid Basil is Nortle’s family. They were raised as brother and sister — the Hare-princess and the Tortoise — and never knew she was a Hare at all.
The dramatic ironies this unlocks:
- The Lepus motto is “Lepus Vincere Cursus” — “the Hare Wins the Race.” But in Basil’s actual childhood, the Tortoise won. Her real life inverts her bloodline’s pride. The arrogant Lepus way (speed, entitlement — her brothers Ventus/Vis/Bys) is exactly the Hare’s hubris that loses the fable.
- The fable was foreshadowing the whole time. A Hare raised among Tortles, who tells “the Tortoise and the Hare” as her own story — she literally is the Hare of the fable, and didn’t know it.
- Her arc = redeeming the motto on new terms. The Hare doesn’t win by speed/pride; she wins because a Tortoise brother taught her humility/persistence. Reclaiming “the Hare wins the race” means winning the Tortoise’s way.
- Thematic echo of the Medinian (ch5-harmonic-time-theory §26): Hare + Tortoise = two complementary opposites that complete each other — a small, mortal rhyme of the chord (speed + steadiness in balance).
Hooks for Nortle’s 6-month backstory (ch5-six-month-backstories)
- Does Nortle know Basil was adopted — and did his family know who she was, or were they used by Oba?
- Nortle’s arc could intersect Basil’s: searching for his scattered sister, or carrying a piece of the truth (a memory, a token from “the Race”) that proves her Lepus identity when the Lepus deny her name.

- (Real-table grace note: Steve GMs early Above-the-Clouds AND later plays Nortle the Tortle — and it’s the GM voice that says “the tortoise wins the race” / “slow and steady.” The fable’s narrator and the Tortoise are the same person. Keep it.)
⚠ Reconciliation — the played backstory IS the implanted lie (canon-safe)
The ch1.1 played origin (digest-sourced): Basil is a Harengon, half-sibling of Nortle, sharing a tortle mother; the father a hare; she was “the only one of the litter that survived because the others were so deformed.” This looks to contradict the Ch5 reveal (she’s the stolen Lepus princess) — but it doesn’t:
The tortle-mother / hare-father / deformed-litter origin is the fabricated identity Oba implanted (the cover the Tortle family raised her on, the version Basil believes and told at the table). The Ch5 reveal is the truth beneath it. The retcon doesn’t overwrite the played canon — it explains it: “the deformed litter, only survivor” is exactly the kind of fabricated reason for why a Hare is the odd one out among Tortles; the hare father is the seam where her true Hare (Lepus) nature peeks through the lie. Her arc = discovering the family she “remembers” was built to hide the family she’s from.
