A hole in the ground containing the Spirit Engines — ancient, malfunctioning magical portals — over which the Church of ITYS was built. Its origins reach back to the apocalypse; its mystery runs under the whole saga.

Overview
The Pit is one of Kaethos’s deep-lore anchors — a chasm holding the Spirit Engines (ancient malfunctioning portals; “three doors”), tied to the child Terry’s death in the Forgotten Hour finale. The Church of ITYS rose directly over it.
Its shadow falls early: in Ch 0.1, the party finds thousands of stitched-together necrotic bodies packed beneath a tavern floor — an unmistakable foreshadow of the canonical Pit and the Spirit Engines beneath the future church.
The Quiet Year (Session 0)
- In Spring (Week 1) a boy named Terry Ringer fell into a pit at the city’s outskirts and died; at the bottom were three mysterious doors leading deeper underground. The community grieved.
- Week 3 revealed the The Spirit Engines behind the doors — ancient magical portals that no longer fully function; the community debated destroying, weaponizing, studying, or relocating them to the The Pearl Dunes.
- The The Church of ITYS built its temple directly over the pit (Weeks 7–13), claiming the stargate as sacred ground and controlling all access.
- A century later, beneath ITYS-Trinity City, the Pit and its Spirit Engines are the most important location in Kaethos.
