A necrotic entity — or force — spreading through the southern wetlands of Kaethos. Not fully understood. May be a cult, a god, a hivemind, or something else entirely.
Etymology & the Zen au Kouréas connection (canon)
“The Kouréas” the players hear about = Zen au Kouréas, the Archlich BBEG of The Forgotten Hour. “Kouréas” is Greek for “barber” — Zen was the Master Barber of the Age before he became the Archlich. The name attaches to three things: (1) Zen the person/BBEG, (2) this necrotic force, and (3) the continent of Kouréas, which was renamed after Zen following the Forgotten Hour. The running joke: the dreaded, continent-naming name literally means barber. Zen began as a ToP Zero-Level 5e roll → Zen-a-Lycoris → Archlich Zen au Kouréas.
What Is Known
- Active in the southern wetlands for at least 12 months prior to The Forgotten Hour
- Spreads through physical contact — necrotic rot begins at the shoulder and spreads outward
- The infected call it “exaltation” — they are not suffering, they are proud
- The fully exalted stop making decisions — they are controlled, not killed
- The necrosis preserves the host (doesn’t drain HP) — it keeps them strong so it can use them
- Entire southern towns have already been “exalted” and vanished from contact
- The barkeep Arcus claimed the north would be exalted within a fortnight
The Touch
When the Kouréas touches a host, necrotic rot spreads from the contact point — typically the shoulder. Stages:

The Voice
The infection transmits a direct psychic connection to the Kouréas. Father ITYS received two transmissions through an infected finger:
- “The time is coming” — repeated ~52 times in a loop
- “Your limbs belong to the bag.” — possible connection to Gog
The Dishwasher
One enslaved individual at The Tavern (Oovuan Petroglyphs) has innate mystical resistance to the Kouréas’s touch. The cult’s response: put him in chains and make him wash dishes until the necrosis can “weather away” his protection over time.
