The crew breaks into a library that hands out books based on why your heart wants them — and learns the hard way that stealing knowledge here makes you part of the collection. Outside its shifting walls waits a shapeshifter’s rigged bargain, a holy Church quietly cooking the region’s favorite street drug, and a smuggler’s ship growling in the dark of a strangely moonless night. One old friend from the docks knows far more than she’s letting on. So who, exactly, just tapped Nortle on the shoulder?

Synopsis

The night opens where Ch 3.3 left them — deep inside the New Old Library, a sentient archive that shelves nothing by subject and answers only the why behind your reaching hand (no Dewey Decimal in this world, just the “Louis Lexicon,” a fantasy card-catalog reimagined as a hallucinating chatbot). The crew is here to lift a coverless alchemy tome, and they stress-test the Archive’s book-scanning gate with the scientific rigor you’d expect: they wedge an ancient book onto the still-shrunken Nortle and Mario-kick him back through the portal like a shell. Xeros, freshly and sincerely converted to Selûne, prays himself to sleep over scripture; Basil bounds across the bookcases hunting Alchemy for Experts; and TBD returns from the bathroom to report he’s still moonlighting as a romance-novel cover model for the author “Jonathan Meoff.” When a whistling giant halfling named Brendel grabs their target off the shelf first, the party robs, rides, and sits on him for the full eleven-minute Identify casting time, using Detect Thoughts to pilfer the gate’s password. The library notices, turns the exit blood-red, and tries to trap the thieves as source material — until Basil’s moon-blade slices a cartoon hole in the barrier and a halo-lit “Nega Xeros” rolls a natural 30 to hold the door for everyone.

Out in the streets of New Old, the plot thickens into a caper. Xeros prays over whether to actually hand the book to the shapeshifter Mutatio who commissioned it, rolls an absurd unassisted nat 26, and gets a flat divine no — so they swap dust jackets, Minor Illusion the naughty pages of the decoy, and pass the shifter a fake while a Disguise Self’d Nortle plays a James-Bond aristocrat. Mutatio flips to the wrong chapter, declares “this is not the book I requested,” folds his entire tent into nothing, and vanishes with the party’s reward — including Nortle’s tarot card. Xeros launches a full one-man redemption side-quest (acolyte robes, hired Church burglar, a prayer to bless this holy theft), and Basil quietly reveals she actually read the real book: there’s an ominous final chapter titled God Making. Selûne’s light guides them to the port and Shrimp the Imp’s Crab and Shrimp Shack, where a hyper-competent hibachi imp cooks with the gold Xeros melts on the griddle — and where, asking after Nortle’s missing old flame Nereza, the party gets a tap on the shoulder. OMG — it’s J-Kins.

Gypsy Jenkins (Haley’s rogue, back at the table voiced by Jesse) yanks Nortle into a booth and lays out the real case: a House Lycoris cargo ship is smuggling obscene amounts of veil powder — the “holy” name the Church of ITYS slaps on the exact same drug the streets call Purple Filth — and it flies the two-fingers-missing hand the party remembers from their near-death Greenport vision. To lift a hidden note off the imp chef, the crew runs a distraction so elaborate it needs a Tenacious-D concert (the “Greatest Song in the World”), a barmaid seduction that reveals only fur, and Baby Shrimp — the chef’s knife-wielding infant son — which promptly escalates to initiative. Xeros Ghost-Steps through a wall as an incorporeal boogeyman, Nortle claps his palm tattoos into a Full-Metal-Alchemist thunderclap, and TBD Charm-Persons the papa imp with what turns out to be his dead wife’s wedding song. The note points them at a bigger doom, so they ride a giant-sized “Turtle Island” Nortle across the harbor, board the veil-powder ship to scuttle it — and Xeros drops a glass crate that shatters loud enough to wake the hold’s mutated guard dogs. Initiative is rolled and the session hard-cuts, the crew caught mid-sabotage and outnumbered. It’s a good cliffhanger.
