Romance in Three Acts — Ch 1.5

A quiet morning of window-shopping above the clouds — a pope hat here, a whip made of real cats there — somehow lands four outsiders center-stage in an improvised three-act romance, cast as lovers, wingmen, and one very handsome villain. There is spiked punch. There is a marriage proposal. There is a scroll with somebody’s name on it. Can the party charm a fickle crowd, outrun the city’s rising suspicion, and still shake loose the one clue that leads to their missing friend — all before the wine wears off? The show must go on. So must the con.

Synopsis

The morning after being shrunk to action-figure size and hauled through a sewer, the party wakes at the seedy Blackguard’s Inn in the floating city of El Cinede, still nursing a lingering affliction — roll a 1 or panic, and you shrink (a real problem for the roughly seven-foot TBD). Foulclaw is sleeping off a religious bender, so the rest go window-shopping through the well-kept High Spire, a “walking zoo” of a party whose every step nudges up a suspicion meter. At Mademoiselle Nero’s they meet a wide-eyed aasimar who makes hats from the skin of creatures “that come up from beneath the ground” — and cheerfully fits Nortle with a glowing-purple “pope hat.” TBD Charm-Persons her and Xeros Distort-Values a coin so they can slip out without truly paying. Next door at Stabber McStabby’s Stabbing Emporium, the draggled owlin Stabber McStabby takes a custom order for Basil’s veil-stone brass knuckles, and Xeros — who keeps chasing his headaches with Envious Pinot Red, guaranteeing he’ll go blind by nightfall — buys a seven-tail cat’s-tail whip “made out of actual cats” that he can’t even use.

Chasing Ricor Broadbelt’s tip to talk with the theater owner Turgra Strongsmith, they arrive at Turgra’s Theater on an improv night. A clipboard-toting Kenku signs up Xeros, who promptly volunteers the whole party — pope-hatted Nortle and all. Four scripts turn out to be the parts of a three-act romance: Captain Crunched the vain, mustache-twirling antagonist (Xeros), Lady Luscious the nerdy-pretty love interest (TBD), Mr. Moist the sweaty, nasal-voiced wingman (Basil, plugging her nose the entire night), and Professor Payne the scrawny childhood-nemesis who pines for her (Foulclaw). As the audience-satisfaction dice start rolling in the crew’s favor, Xeros spikes the play’s punch with real Prideful Port Rum — “the cocaine one” — dosing his own tablemates with euphoria and an addiction save mid-scene. The story escalates from a lakeside Midsummer Fair into a full-blown love-triangle brawl.

The climax is the con’s masterstroke. Basil snaps a set of enchanted bracelets — revealed to be permanent-Suggestion charms by which Captain Crunched was quietly building a harem — and Foulclaw, amped and furious after a slapstick beating, burns a scroll to launch a Chromatic Orb (“tears!”) for 27 thunder damage, shattering Xeros’s Disguise Self and freeing every charmed woman in the house. The crowd goes wild; and when an old foe — Tobiah, the recurring dockside owlin the party wronged back in ch1.2 — bursts in howling that they attacked and “drowned” him at the port, they simply smother him under a hail of Distort-Valued gold and “hire” him into the act. Backstage, a delighted Turgra Strongsmith trades favors over coin: their missing gnome friend Manni Dugal is held in the Ascendant’s Library’s inner sanctum, and a keg of spiced wine from The Finery and Winery will grease the guards. He also lays bare the city’s secret politics — the Host who want to ascend with the world below, and the Crew who experiment on captured creatures to hasten it — before the party, having fingered Tobiah as Crew-biased, heads out… and a re-blinded Xeros walks straight into the wall.

🎙️ Notable Moments

00:32:33 — TBD asks the friendly hat-maker what, exactly, her lovely hats are made of. He should not have asked.

Mademoiselle Nero (Steve): We sometimes have things coming up from beneath the ground, and I can take off their skin. It’s so wonderful — they make delighted sounds! TBD: Okay. I think I’m going to puke.

00:28:33 — The milliner offers the silent Nortle a towering conical skin hat. He commits, hard.

GM: Nortle looks slowly from the hat up to her and back down — and the slow sloth smile from Zootopia spreads across his face. Nero (Steve): Ten gold pieces. TBD: Yeah, I don’t got any money. But I also don’t know who that was.

00:50:06 — Xeros insists on buying a whip he is mechanically incapable of using, on principle.

GM: Oh, you wanna buy the whip? The one made out of actual cattails? Xeros: Yeah, the cattail whip. It doesn’t matter if I can use it or not — I could find a use.

01:06:20 — The scripts come out, and the party discovers the shape of the night: a three-act romance, with roles that fit far too well.

Basil: Oh boy, y’all — I am Mr. Moist. I’m scrawny, constantly sweating. TBD: What the hell — I’m Lady Luscious, the romantic interest! Xeros: I am Captain Crunched. I am the antagonist… I want to twirl my mustache.

01:28:11 — Xeros dumps a very real drug into the play's fictional punch — and it lands on his own tablemates.

Xeros: You guys got hit with the Prideful Port Rum — spiked with powdered power. Causes euphoria… advantage on all ability checks and attack rolls. TBD: This is the cocaine one.

01:29:35 — Act II. Professor Payne makes his entrance, and the audience loses its mind (a second natural 20).

Professor Payne (Foulclaw): Lady Luscious — I am here to claim you my bride! By the end of this night, you will be mine! I challenge any soul here — who dares contend for the maiden’s hand?

01:46:00 — Mr. Moist rips the bracelets off the enchanted women — and the villain's whole scheme unravels.

Basil (Mr. Moist): I crunchitize those bracelets into little bits of Captain Crunch. Xeros: Those were spells of permanent Suggestion — so once it’s removed, Daisy knows she was being manipulated.

01:52:21 — The climax. Foulclaw, amped on the punch and freshly beaten, remembers his scroll and takes his shot. (the episode's namesake payoff — 27 thunder damage ends the third act.)

Professor Payne (Foulclaw): In my furious rage — “tears!” — I cast a Chromatic Orb. I’m going to hit you ten times harder than you hit me, and I’m aiming for your freaking nuts. Xeros: I lose all concentration and turn from this buff dude into a four-foot-tall nerd with tape on his glasses — straight-up a tiefling again. The bracelets all shine and fall off. I was trying to collect a harem… but you’ve stopped that.

01:58:10 — The denouement. Two former rivals settle into domestic bliss, brand-loyalty and all.

Professor Payne (Foulclaw): If we want to go back to my place, I’ve got some power tools… Milwaukee makes an array of products. Lady Luscious (TBD): I’m more of a DeWalt kind of gal.

02:02:05Tobiah, the party's old dockside foe, storms the stage to expose them. They simply refuse to let him not be part of the show.

Tobiah (Steve): Stop! This is not what I’m— don’t let them deceive you, everyone! Xeros: Do you want to join our troupe? This is perfect — you’ve got so much energy!

02:06:25 — Turgra Strongsmith names his price, and it isn't gold.

Turgra Strongsmith (Steve): That was a good play — I had not expected what you have given me. I don’t like money. I prefer favors, I prefer information. I find that to be much more valuable.

02:22:04 — After a triumphant night, Xeros pays for the Envious Pinot Red the way he always does.

Xeros: We turn to walk out — and I just walk straight into the wall. GM: I think that is where we’ll call it. With you walking face-first into the wall.

Veil Tear / Veil StoneThe century-old magical rupture that tore the land free to float; its stones power Basil’s knuckles and the city’s ascent.
Father ITYS / School of ITYSFoulclaw’s faith and alma mater; he leaves proselytizing pamphlets and tries to fold “the truth” into the city’s Ascension belief.

Cliffhanger

The party brought the house down and walked out with exactly what they came for: Manni Dugal is in the Ascendant’s Library inner sanctum, and a keg of spiced wine from The Finery and Winery — their next stop — is the key past the guards. All that stands between them and the heist is one shopping trip… and a bard who just walked face-first into a wall.
