A lost recording, run back a second time — the party burns another looping day at the Battle of the Bands, and this time they mean to do it right. There’s a fading superstar’s autograph to chase, a curiosity shop run by an owlin who has never met a stranger he liked, and a very polite little imp whose back room hides a very impolite surprise. All day long a hooded figure keeps slipping the net inside TBD’s Dream — but a dream only resets so many times before somebody stops running. Who’s really been pulling the strings behind the music?

Synopsis

The whole day is a dream — comatose TBD’s dream — and the party is living the Battle of the Bands over again, a repeating fairground loop in the city of Magus where only they seem to remember yesterday. Fresh off chasing a hooded figure into The Dark Woods, they regroup at Fawn Butterface’s bar, where a grateful Fawn — her stock nearly sold out by the crew — hands each of them a free signature drink from her personal stash before walking off into the sunset with Van Illa. Then it’s four o’clock, and that means the merch booth, and that means Foulclaw gets his one request: an autograph from the pop superstar LaDonna. The line runs the length of The Fairgrounds, so Xeros simply becomes LaDonna — Disguise Self, a borrowed pan-flute, and a fake T-shirt giveaway “seven miles into the forest” — and pied-pipers the entire crowd toward the dream’s border while the real LaDonna signs Foulclaw’s scripture as a “co-author.” Foulclaw, for his part, snips a lock of her hair and eats it, reasoning that anything inside him will survive the reset.

With the line dispersed, the crew goes shopping. Nortle wants maracas; Another Man’s Treasure turns out to be not a brothel but a “worldwide curation of bric-a-brac” run by the episode’s namesake — Talon Sharpclaw, an elderly owlin professor of the School of Magus, a well-travelled antiquarian and an unrepentant bigot who calls every non-owlin “animals” and can barely stand to look at a tiefling. Where Foulclaw is a holy man, Talon is the material owlin: worldly, proud, and openly racist. The party robs him blind under cover of a popped shirt-button — a level-two spell scroll, a Tortle trading card, and a precious TBD scroll — before Xeros melts a fistful of gold and decks the old bird on the beak. They flee the guards with barely thirty seconds to spare, the newly-liberated Book of Tourette’s cackling profanity all the way out.

Next door, Limp the Imp Biscuit’s Fix-It Shop promises maracas and weapon upgrades — Limp the Imp strengthens Xeros’s Moon-touched rapier with a Veil Stone, nervously eyeing the Lycorisians who hunt the stones — and then, all politeness, herds the party into a back room and locks the door. It’s a betting arena, and Limp’s “little problem” is loose: The Shark n Bear, a grizzly-bloodhound hybrid with great-white-shark heads for hands, poked with a stick for eighty hours until it escaped. In a fight the GM mercifully trims to a couple of rounds, Xeros vomits Purge! to slick the floor, Nortle breathes dragon-fire, and Basil rolls a natural 20 that lets her katana’s sakuku bonus lop a shark head clean off — but the beast still nearly guts Nortle to two hit points. The clever finish comes from Xeros using his Crystal ball of telepathy to scry the imps and Suggest a losing gambler to spring the door: the Shark n Bear bolts, remembers the smell of its makers, and starts eating imps. In the chaos the hooded figure runs — and Basil traps her under a dome of force, knocking out a tooth that lodges in the wall forever. When the hood comes back at last, the face beneath it is one they’ve been chasing all arc long: LaDonna.

Xeros: I’m actually going to drink Purge. GM: Upon drinking Purge you immediately vomit a surprising amount; the ground within 10 feet becomes covered in slick grease and every creature there falls prone. Nortle: It’s full exorcist.
