A cornered pop star finally pulls back her hood, and the answers she offers only open more doors: a listening villain, a debt paid in the dead, and a power so deep beneath the world that even she won’t name it. To save a friend they’ll never reach, four heroes have one weapon left — a battle of the bands — and a name of their own worth screaming. But every song they win only proves how far down the loop really goes… and something is spelling a word in the dark that none of them can read yet. Rock hard. The reset is coming.

Synopsis

Still standing over the Wolfgang-wall of force they trapped her in last session, a toothless LaDonna pulls back her hood and starts talking. She is a Kalashtar — born of the Plane of Dreams, and therefore immune to the loop everyone else at the Battle of the Bands is trapped in — and she has spent her fame in indentured “favors” to the true power behind it all: the Dreamweaver. Wolfgang is only a pawn; the Dreamweaver is only a middle layer. When the party diagrams the whole villain hierarchy as a seven-layer bean dip, they land on a bottom nobody wants to touch — the Tupperware that props the whole thing up, a power so far down that even LaDonna knows nothing about it except that it frightens her. Guilt-sick over the fans who died at one of her shows, she wants out of her debt too badly to help openly — but she’s been quietly sabotaging every rival band so these four can climb the bracket, and once the party shows her TBD’s Scrolls she grasps the truth: the Dreamweaver is hunting the Book of Chronomancy that TBD hauled out of the Swollen Wastes, and TBD has been bending his own dream just enough to leave them breadcrumbs.

So the plan becomes the stage. Greeted by a flustered Fran Dressa in the missing Wolfgang’s place, the party — finally christening themselves The Impire (imp plus empire), their spectral rock persona a were-imp that erupts into a fire-breathing dragon — muscle through the bracket. They crush MC Freedom’s Rock Flag and Eagle, out-riff the ancient, litigious Meta Lica in a squeaker of a semifinal, and turn every good deed of the loop into an edge on the scorecard: Foulclaw raids Roses and Gunzes’ green room (and, failing to find their scroll, makes off with Axe L. Rows’s makeup kit instead), Basil scoops fire from her ruby gauntlet straight down the dragon’s throat, and Nortle drums a solo with a maraca between his toes. The Impire strikes first, and strikes hard.

Then comes the finale, and the finale is always the same: TBD’s own band, Killasaurus. Before the last round Xeros turns his Crystal Ball on his catatonic friend and, on a natural twenty, forces TBD’s dream-eyes open — glimpsing him superimposed in a scroll-lined School of Magus classroom, ringed by six glowing symbols. Foulclaw reads them: two H’s, two I’s, two L’s, a T. Lilith. TBD’s dead one-and-only love, and the key to the whole loop. The Impire loses the finale 9-to-6 the way they were always going to — Xeros blowing the last die on a nat 1 — and as the defeat lands the six circles bloom on the stage itself. Xeros steps into one, whispers Lilith, and feels the word reverberate through the light… right up until it swells to blinding white and dumps all four of them back in line at the ticket booth. The loop begins again. This time they have a word.
