Cho Mama's Pho Cup — Ch 4.2
Trapped in a spotless underground lab with their friend dismembered on a cross, the party has to sneak past the masked woman who did it — and figure out why an entire region is choking on a black mist that reeks of burnt scales. But the real danger isn’t the villain who walks right past them; it’s the kindly old boatman who can’t stop talking about mermaids. When a stranger at the dock offers you a hot bowl and a bad fortune, do you eat? Listen to your mama — Cho Mama’s Pho Cup.

Synopsis
Picking up on Ch 4.1’s cliffhanger, the party stands in a hidden laboratory beneath Castle Leary — a magic-void basement where Basil hangs on an Andrew’s cross with both arms sawn off and a shell-patch and slashed tattoo none of them have ever seen on her back. Nortle and TBD have been chloroformed on beds (Nortle simply hot-boxes it out of his own shell), a nat-1 prayer confirms Father ITYS has forsaken a shrinking Foulclaw, and Xeros — Captain Grabby — bags Basil’s severed hands and her Knuckles of Change on reflex. Then the lab’s owner returns: Millie, the castle daughter who’s been secretly resisting, fakes her own hypnosis with a spray of purple perfume and screams at them to hide as her mistress comes down the stairs. On a real-life 30-second timer they scatter — Foulclaw to the rafters, TBD shrunk on his bed — and the masked Astaroth walks right past them, collects her notebook, and drags a doomed Millie out by the hair.
Left alone with the machine, the party pieces the horror together. A tank of preserving fluid holds twenty-eight racked limbs; it’s fueled by iridescent coals that turn out to be dragon-and-merfolk scales, skinned and burning for days on end — and the smoke funneling up the pipes is the Black Mist poisoning the whole region. They wake Basil with an Awaken draught only to learn the worst: her memory is gone, she doesn’t know her own brother, and even Purple Filth can’t anchor her back. A now-lucid Marie — freed the moment the machine went dark — begs them to cross the bay and check on the family’s dying Orchard, and the crew reluctantly leaves a hollowed-out Basil behind to recover, Xeros posting a scrying orb to watch her.
At the dock before dawn they meet Cho Mama, a Tabaxi noodle-cart grandmother whose ramen carries buffs that never expire until spent — and whose homemade tarot deck deals out fortunes good and cursed, unsettling everyone by reading Selûne off the back of her cards (“Cho Mama know what death smells like!”). Then the Ferryman arrives: an ancient, scarf-necked boatman whose steam-tug cabin is a shrine to merfolk. TBD lifts a scale and a journal from the cabin; the moment Xeros flashes that scale and drops Astaroth’s name, the old man hurls a gas bomb, drops all four of them, and pitches their bodies into the bay. They wake underwater sealed in living Dom-Khan diver-suits, saved by the Mergon — and float down to their dying queen Sissily, whose scales are the very fuel Astaroth is burning, whose memory has been stolen just like Basil’s, and who once sang a certain tune to a certain sea-explorer named Jock Bjorn. The session ends at the base of the Orchard stairs, the crew climbing toward whatever the mist has done up top.
🎵 Song Recap (rhyming — drop into an AI song generator)
Scheme: AABB verses + chorus. Suggested vibe: minor-key sea shanty with a warm ramen-house lilt.
(Verse 1) Down in a lab that’s spotless and cold, A friend on a cross with her arms sold for gold; A masked woman comes and we hold our breath — Thirty real seconds to hide from a death.
(Chorus) Listen to your mama, take the bowl she pours, A blessing in the broth and a curse in the cards; The mist is just scales that were skinned in the dark — Cho Mama’s Pho Cup, now say your amen.
(Verse 2) Wake up the bunny, but the bunny’s a stranger, Her memory’s ash and her brother’s in danger; Leave her to rest with a scrying-eye guard, Then down to the dock where the noodles are served.
(Verse 3) An old man rows with his mermaid dreams, Flash him one scale and he bursts at the seams; A bomb and the water and everything’s black — You breathe in a fish and you’re never coming back.
(Outro) Listen to your mama… the queen’s growing pale — Her scales are the smoke and her song’s in the tale; They climb toward the Orchard, the mist overhead — Eat what you’re given, and mind what it said.
📋 Point-by-point breakdown (player catch-up — everything that happened)
00:00:00· 🎭 RP — Cold open: a “Clapper” bit spirals (“not the clap — a completely different clap”) before Brin, apologizing in advance, kicks off the stream and re-introduces the cast to the Twitch faithful.00:03:11· 📖 Recap — Brin rewinds Ch 4.1: the party broke into the not-so-secret lab under Castle Leary and found two hypnotized servants and Basil hung on an Andrew’s cross, both arms severed.00:06:44· 🎲 Mechanic — House rule: at level 6 the party pitches raising the flat DC to 16 (“go up one pip per level”). Brin adopts it, then immediately blurts “I regret DMing!”00:09:11· 🎲 Mechanic — Waking the party from the chloroform: Nortle is weirdly immune (“you’ve just been hot-boxing chloroform inside your shell”), while Foulclaw nat-1s a prayer and shrinks into “cute Foulclaw mode” — no moonlight, no Selûne, no help down here.00:11:10· 🎭 RP — Captain Grabby Xeros pockets Basil’s severed hands and both Knuckles of Change, tossing the poison (emerald) gauntlet to Foulclaw.00:23:03· 📖 Lore — Brin reveals Basil’s hidden back: a hybrid shell-patch she constantly picks flat and a never-before-seen tattoo (a bear’s paw and a great-white fin sharing a pinky), slashed in two — so the party casts Minor Illusion to disguise her body as a “flesh golem.”00:29:09· 🎭 RP — Millie bursts in — the castle daughter who found the lab that shrank the distillery — then sprays purple perfume in her eyes to fake hypnosis and hisses at the party to hide now on a real-life 30-second timer.00:34:38· 🎲 Mechanic — Foulclaw burns Tides of Chaos to re-roll stealth and flies to the rafters; Brin introduces a bad-roll “good-luck token” currency that pays off later.00:37:24· 🧭 RP — The masked Astaroth descends (Brin has a printed mask prop she’s too proud of to actually wear), re-chloroforms a shrunk TBD, grabs her notebook, and marches a mind-wiped Millie out by the hair.00:53:23· 📖 Lore — The pristine lab yields its secret: a preservation tank of 28 racked limbs fueled by burning Iridescent scales whose smoke is the Black Mist; Xeros pockets a fistful of coals for “gambit throwing.”01:05:15· 📖 Lore — Xeros recalls Zen au Kouréas “was a barber according to the history books,” a necromancer, while Foulclaw reads the severed limbs and earth-fissures as Gog/Selûne conflict symbolism — and, since it’s a magic-void castle, Xeros argues none of it is even magic.01:12:44· 🎭 RP — An Awaken draught opens Basil’s eyes — “where are my hands?” — but she’s fully mind-wiped: she can’t name herself, her brother, or the party.01:16:30· 📖 Lore — A now-lucid Marie (grey-eyed, freed the instant the machine died) explains Astaroth’s hypnosis-machine erases memory over time, that Basil is likely gone for good, and begs the crew to cross the bay and check the family’s dying Orchard.01:41:30· 🎲 Mechanic — The party divvies up cleric spell scrolls from Lashara’s recovered cart (Ceremony, Planar Ally, Holy Weapon, Beast Bond) and decides to leave Basil to recover — Xeros posts a scrying orb to watch her.02:07:16· 🎭 RP — At the dawn dock, Cho Mama the Tabaxi noodle grandmother arrives (“Chowmama here to feed you!”), serving Ramen buffs that don’t expire until spent.02:14:22· 🎲 Mechanic — Cho Mama deals Tarot fortunes good and cursed — the Emperor, the Fool, Death, the Hangman — reading Selûne off the back of her cards and rattling the devout.02:29:33· 🧭 Travel — The Ferryman pulls up: an ancient, scarf-necked boatman whose steam-tug cabin is a shrine to merfolk; TBD slips inside and lifts a Mergonian scale and a journal.02:43:30· ⚔️ Combat — Xeros flashes the scale and names Astaroth; the Ferryman hurls a green gas bomb, drops all four, and throws their bodies into the bay.02:47:33· 📖 Lore — They wake underwater in living Dom-Khan diver-suits before Sissily, dying queen of the Mergon, whose stolen memory and skinned-scale fuel tie her straight to Astaroth — and whose old song was once sung to Jock Bjorn.03:26:50· ⏸️ Pause — Sissily sends them up the Hexes cliff-stairs to the Orchard; the session stops at the first step for next time.

🎙️ Notable Moments
00:00:03— The stream opens not on the rescue but on a debate about a household gadget, and Brin can't parse the reference.Foulclaw: Clap on! Nortle: Clap on! Xeros: Not the clap — it’s a completely different clap if you’re thinking about the wrong clap. GM: Oh! Not the clap. Aw, dang it…
00:05:32— Jesse's real-life indigestion becomes a Constitution save, and the owlin's anatomy saves the day.Foulclaw: Can I make a Constitution check to see if I like crap my pants when I see these guys? GM: You’ve been exercising your sphincter control during mid-flight — you don’t want to poop on people while you’re flying. Foulclaw: It’s the silent feathers. Twenty-five — I held it in. GM: Phenomenal control in that area. Best roll you’ll have all night.
00:08:35— The table talks Brin into a level-6 house rule, and she instantly sees the future.Xeros: Every level above six, go up one pip — so at level 8 you’ll all be rolling in with nothing but nat-20s… and then you’ll all die. Foulclaw: This could backfire in the future, is what it sounds like. GM: So I’ve made a mistake. …I regret DMing! TBD: For this episode only.
00:11:50— With Basil dismembered in front of him, Foulclaw prays for help and rolls the worst possible result.
00:50:26— Xeros accuses Brin of taking back her own house rule, and the DM plants her flag.Xeros: You can’t Indian-give on a rule. GM: I’m the f***ing DM! I’ll do whatever this guy wants — and I’m taking back my own thing! Xeros: Fine — take it back. Take it back! Don’t argue with this DM, holy crap. GM: I am in control here. It was my decision.
01:15:01— Nortle hears his sister's voice from the illusion-disguised corpse, and the party gaslights him with the dumbest cover story.Nortle: Coloring books are great, but so is my sister — so why does the flesh golem have your tattoos and sound like Basil? Xeros: Because you’re a flesh golem. Nortle: …and I’m a turtle. How would we possibly be related? Foulclaw: Yep. That’s ridiculous.
01:22:08— TBD wakes to hear a suspiciously charitable Xeros volunteering the party for free work.Xeros: We’ll do it out of the goodness of our hearts. GM (Marie): I’m glad to hear that. I’m GLAD TO HEAR IT! TBD: Wait — who’s that guy? That doesn’t sound like Xeros. You’re an imposter. Nortle: Apparently he’s got a number of clones, and this is one of them.
01:31:07— A mind-wiped, armless Basil demands to know why they didn't also save a corpse, and Xeros lays out the difference gently.GM (Basil): Why didn’t you save that guy? Xeros: He has no head. You have no hands. Head, hands — it’s kind of a big difference. Just a little bit… minor. GM (Basil): (she throws up all over again) Foulclaw: I’ll regurgitate an owl pellet, so she doesn’t feel left out.
02:07:16— The party's dawn wait at the dock is interrupted by the woman who names the episode.GM (Cho Mama): Hello, good morning — Chowmama here to feed you! You want some yum-yum? TBD: Heck yeah, man, pass that over — let’s see what’s on the menu, I’m so hungry. Xeros: Guys — if we order anything from her, make sure we purify the food and drink first. GM (Cho Mama): So simple. Cho Mama feed you.
02:22:14— Cho Mama has the party smell a numbered fortune, and the answer is grim.GM (Cho Mama): You smell it — you tell me what number. Xeros: …Thirteen. GM (Cho Mama): Mmm — Cho Mama know what death smells like! This card is change, like death. It’s inevitable. The DM gets to decide to change your roll to whatever they want, any time. Xeros: I’m getting the feeling none of these are positive, my friends.
02:56:35— Newly sealed in a living fish-suit, Xeros discovers it can be directed — and immediately regrets the target.Xeros: Hey, DomCom — can you get in my pants real quick and pull out one of those scales? Hey — hey! Stay away from there! Go to the right! GM: It’s purring. It’s fondling something in your pockets. Xeros: Nope! Yep! Don’t you touch any gold in there! Foulclaw: Oh my gosh — Selûne, forgive us.

Cliffhanger
The party flashed the wrong old man the wrong scale — and the kindly, mermaid-obsessed Ferryman dropped them where they stood, gassed and sinking into the bay. They wake wrapped in living Dom-Khan suits at the feet of Sissily, the dying Mergon queen whose stolen memory, harvested scales, and half-forgotten song all point back to Astaroth — and up above, through the Black Mist, the Orchard is rotting. All that’s left is the climb.
