The light of the moon and the Queen at Oruel’s side — the female half of the Oruvian crown. Goddess of the moon, stars, and wanderers, a guide through darkness and a healer of the lost. Through her sister Shar, the dark of the moon, she is also the Oruvian gods’ one open door to the dark powers beyond.

Overview

Selûne (pronounced seh-LOON-ay), also called Our Lady of Silver or the Moonmaiden, is the goddess of the moon, stars, navigation, wanderers, and good and neutral lycanthropes. Her symbol is a pair of female eyes surrounded by seven silver stars, and she wields the Rod of Four Moons. Her worshippers are sailors, female spellcasters, and any soul seeking a light to follow through the dark.

In the cosmology of Kaethos she is the light of the moon and the Queen of the Oruvian Gods — the female partner to the Sun-King Oruel. But she is also a being of two natures: she and her sister Shar, the dark of the moon, are one whole, forever waxing and waning in power as the lunar cycle turns. Because of that bond, Selûne is the Oruvian gods’ open connection to the Ekalian gods — and Shar, in turn, is the Ekalians’ connection back to the light. The two sisters are the hinge between the two pantheons.

The Vessel-Cycle

Selûne cycles through her “phases of the moon” by inhabiting a succession of mortal vessels; when a vessel runs its course it must be remade — once every dispensation (1,000 years). The vessel being prepared in Chapter 4 is Purdona. Her owl-clergy run free hospitals; their sacrament — the “cracker of long rest” — is a literal potion of healing (seen at the Temple of Selûne in Greenport). Saint Gray is “one in purpose” under her.
