Caged Wisdom — Ch 4.5

Somewhere in the Black Mist there’s a song written in a drowned language, and it’s the only key to a memory somebody had stolen from them. To read it the party will have to talk their way past a lonely gunslinger guarding a dead dragon’s last gift, wade into a pool no one is allowed to touch, and kneel to a goddess who cannot leave. But when a divine prisoner tells you her bars were built to protect the world from her — who put her there, and what were they so afraid she could do? Some cages keep you in. Some keep the rest of us out.

Synopsis

Down a session-worth of PCs (their fighter Basil is out cold at Castle Leary, because her player is running the table), the party wakes up owed loot. Brin retcons in the reward for last session’s Trial of Taste: the Stick Chops, jade-and-silver chopsticks that let Nortle taste a lie and make a filet mignon taste like plain romaine — “your entire life is Soylent Green.” Chasing the real prize — restoring the lost memory encoded in a mermaid’s song — they teleport to Castle Leary via their Dimension Door Key, where the sleepwalking Basil (now insisting her name is “Rosemary”) has been assembling clues one nub at a time. Combining her torn lyric page with the water-logged Mermaid Song Sheets, they read a heartbreak in five senses — all I taste is ashes… the touch of his scales… the sound of water whistles on the bay — and set out to earn back each sense in turn.

The road runs through the recovering Forbidden Fruits Orchard — where the Pillars are budding again and may mark the very spot Selûne and Shar once came down to the prophet Father ITYS — and into Destination Desiccation, a scorched dragonborn town whose people like the Mist (“gives us a nice shadow at high noon”). In the saloon they find their Trial of Touch: a lonely, white-scaled gunslinger named Locke (“Lockloliday the Lonely”), whose iridescent hide shifts color when he drinks — and who happens to know Basil (“the softest thing I’ve ever pet”). One thrown punch from her brother Nortle later, the duel is on: a three-round shootout of Luck and nerve that Xeros wins by aiming the pistol at his own head. The prize is the Glove of Pale Scale, stitched from the scales of Locke’s ancestor — the dragon-prince Leon.

Masked against the Mist by Herold’s hand-delivered Breathing Tanks, the party follows the song’s water to Moon Basin Falls — and promptly ruins the sacred pool by sticking their filthy bare feet in it. Up on a pedestal, ringed by faint moonlight bars, waits Purdona: goddess of rivers and purity, younger sister of Selûne, and a prisoner. She runs the party through the Trial of Sound as a giggling game of Name That Tune, hands TBD the Water Whistle and, for caring about Sissily’s library over her eggs, gives Foulclaw the Firestone — completing the Trial of Sight too. Only then does the truth of her cage come out: Selûne locked her away not to punish her but to keep Astaroth from weaponizing her purity, and it was the sea-god Eadro who cursed Sissily for loving the dragon-prince Leon in the first place. The party reinforces her cage with a prayer and a paper guardian, and turns for home — two trials down, a goddess weeping a single celestial tear behind them, and Nortle so stubbornly himself that a live miracle rolls right off his shell.

🎙️ Notable Moments

00:10:46Nortle's new Stick Chops can make any food taste however he wants — and the table realizes what that means for a monk of simple tastes.

GM (Brin): So it tastes exactly how you want it to. Foulclaw: Bussed out a filet mignon that tastes like romaine lettuce?! TBD: It’s such a waste. I hate you. Xeros: It’s literally Soylent Green. Your entire life is Soylent Green.

00:36:47 — Handless and memory-fogged at Castle Leary, Basil (whose player is running the whole game) has quietly decided she is someone else now.

GM (Basil): Stop calling me that. My name is Rosemary. Xeros: Razzle Rosemary. …All right. GM (Basil): I tasted some for the first time today. It was pretty good, so I decided that’s going to be my new name. GM (Basil): I like Basil. It’s a gross herb. I’m going to my room. You guys suck. (door slam)

00:55:48Xeros, trying to explain his sobriety, describes an ITYS holy-day called Flint where you give something up — and Ursa, the dragon dying alone in her cave, answers from the heart.

Xeros: There’s this celebration in ITYS we call Flint — you give something up. It’d be nice if he gave something up for Flint. TBD: …probably just food. GM (Ursa): I already gave up my son.

01:03:01 — Casing the dead-end town of Destination Desiccation, Nortle can't resist a pun about the saloon — and the GM literally pays out for it.

Foulclaw: Saloon, eh? Nortle: That’s the Canadian version. Xeros: Saloon, eh? Damn, that was so good. You deserve a coin for that one. Here you go. GM (Brin): …you can have two.

01:22:58 — The white-scaled gunslinger Locke means it as a compliment that he's petted the "spicy sweet Hungarian rabbit" — but Nortle is that rabbit's brother.

GM (Locke): You wouldn’t happen to be friends with that spicy sweet Hungarian rabbit? She was the softest thing I’ve ever pet. Nortle: (punch — 25 to hit) GM (Locke): (spits blood, laughing) You must be Basil’s brother.

01:37:32 — Nobody at the table has modifiers for the gun-duel — so Xeros finds a thematic loophole for his Bardic Inspiration.

Xeros: I am going to touch myself and give myself Bardic Inspiration — this is the Trial of Touch, my friend. It’s all about touching. GM (Brin): …gosh, you motherfucker. Xeros: (activates Ghost Step, points the gun at his own head) Eighteen. Auto-hit.

03:05:14Purdona's "Name That Tune" trial hits a song the whole table is sure they know.

TBD: Are we human… or are we dancer? Foulclaw: I went 50-50! GM (Brin): All of you failed. It’s Human. Xeros: I said human. I was the closest!

03:28:16Xeros keeps offering to free the caged goddess — until Purdona explains what her bars are actually for.

Xeros: We could probably find a way to get you out. GM (Purdona): I can’t leave. I could be used as a weapon — we can’t allow that to happen. GM (Purdona): This cage isn’t to keep me in. It’s to keep others out.

03:33:33 — The party asks why Basil — who has been sleepwalking these very roads — never met the goddess at the falls.

GM (Purdona): Basil came by. But she wouldn’t take off her boots, so I could not appear. Xeros: Great Britta. The goddess.

03:38:24 — After Purdona's weeping miracle, everyone rolls to resist being Converted by the sheer holiness of it. Everyone, that is, except the one soul it can't touch.

Nortle: Twenty-one! Xeros: You’re so dumb you don’t even notice it. Nortle: He is the most stubborn soul. GM (Brin): Nortle was swatting at a wisp and missed it — a spotlight and whispers swirling behind him, and he’s completely unaware. …I think that is a perfect ending.

Cliffhanger

Two of the Five Trials are done — the party carries the Glove of Pale Scale, the Water Whistle, and the Firestone back toward Castle Leary — but they leave a goddess still behind her bars, wiping a single celestial tear. Purdona stays caged so Astaroth can never turn purity into a weapon, a third spire of Mist still smokes somewhere unmapped, and the way to give Basil her memory back may already be “closer than you think.” And behind them all, oblivious, Nortle walks on — the one soul too stubborn for a miracle to catch.
