The battle beneath the Orchard is over — but the harder part is the aftermath. There’s a bleeding goddess chained to a machine, a captured villain kneeling for judgment, a gift-wrapped miracle that can raise the dead, and a mercy vote none of them can agree on. When the enemy is beaten and the debate turns to who deserves to be saved, one quiet promise is about to settle everything at once. They came to rescue a god. History will remember what they did next as the Mergon Massacre.

Synopsis

Picking up on the Clorox Kill Box cliffhanger, the dust settles in the chamber beneath The Forbidden Fruits Orchard: Astaroth has vanished in a swarm of her metal insects, and the party is left standing over the real horror — the demigoddess Purdona pinned to a bed of fifty needle-thin beetles that are slowly draining her silvery, “liquid-moonlight” blood into bottles, her power leaking out because she is surrounded by thirty chained, impure prisoners. A TBD nat-20 opens the night by reading the machine. The party splits: Nortle, TBD and Basil chase Astaroth, while Xeros and Foulclaw stay to free the goddess. The rescue is grim theology made mechanical — because purity is the problem, the way to heal Purdona is to remove the impure, so Xeros works his way down the line of criminals as an “experiment of faith,” and her health bar ticks up with every one. It goes sideways fast when Foulclaw, enthralled, licks the moonlight blood and his “moral compass goes very dull.”

With the prisoners dealt with and Purdona finally lifted off the needles by a well-placed Create Water, the cavern fills with thunderous footsteps — the Mergonian soldiers return, escorting the Astaroth-hunters back and dragging their quarry with them. Mara Vilantis — hatched from an egg, luminous with gratitude that the party helped her mother regain her memory — presents a beaten, kneeling Astaroth and tells them to do as they will. Astaroth, revealed as more machine than woman, vomits black oil and spits venom about the father who abandoned her; Nortle finishes his interrupted throat-punch, and Foulclaw takes Xeros’s borrowed Moon-touched rapier and cuts through her mechanical throat. As the villain’s machinery sparks and dies, a purity-charmed Xeros crumples and weeps for her. Then Mara offers a parting gift: a reassembled egg that can clone one dead person back to life — a spare miracle the party immediately earmarks for the dead girl Millie Holton.

And then Basil asks for a group hug. Everyone leans in — even Purdona — and mid-embrace Basil drives her sword through Mara and throws up a dome of force, holding it shut while the Mergonian army claws at the walls to reach their queen. When the blade comes free and Mara dies, every soldier drops at once: Mara was a hive-mind queen, and roughly a million and a half cloned Mergonians were only ever alive because she was — a promise Basil quietly made to the ailing Queen Sissily, who feared her own daughter’s army would be turned into a weapon. In the hush after, Purdona lays it bare to Foulclaw alone: she is Selûne’s next vessel, the body being made to hold the goddess through her next turning — and by saving her, the party has saved Selûne. The orchard’s roots grow into a staircase, the party climbs out toward Castle Leary, and Brin ends her chapter the only way she can — by handing the dice to Dave. “Welcome to Chapter 5.”

Cliffhanger
