A god’s own seal stands between the party and the ritual killing their friend, and the only way through is to do the unthinkable — again. Beyond it waits the man who commissioned a book, wearing a face that isn’t his, chanting over three doors that were sealed the day the world nearly ended. Some secrets have been kept for a hundred years. Some brothers were never really brothers. And when the thing behind the mask finally sheds every stolen face and speaks its name — who, exactly, is Legion?

Synopsis

Finals are behind them — feats mastered, exams passed, Basil’s revised healing power gleefully rechristened the Throwing On of Hands (you heal by touching people with your feet, “cause it’s a feet”) — but there’s no time to celebrate. The party has chased the shapeshifter Mutatio — the book-commissioner from ch3.4 — into the Temple of ITYS, where he stands before the three-door Stargate performing a demonic ritual while their bird ally Foulclaw bleeds out on the central runes as a sacrifice. A Hallow spell dome — cast by Father ITYS himself in the aftermath of The Forgotten Hour — seals the whole chamber, and nothing they throw at it works. So Xeros does what Xeros does: he mainlines three doses of Purple Filth, gets thrown into a Memory of Father ITYS sanctifying a Moon-Touched blade with holy water, and the party dips their weapons in two conveniently-remembered fountains and Shatters a pile of Veil Stones to rocket bodily through the god’s own wall. It works. It also immediately drops Xeros into a full episode of death saves.

What follows is a boss fight that runs on venereal-disease puns and raw sibling energy. The party unmasks the villain Scooby-Doo style — “it’s Old Man Jenkins from the amusement park!” — revives the controlled Foulclaw by jamming his own headphones onto his head Stranger-Things-style, and learns the only thing that hurts the boss is a Moon-Touched blade laid across the glowing Preservation Runes carved into his flesh. Basil severs a whole rune-arm with her Katana, Nortle grabs his “little sister” by the ears and swings her like living nunchucks, and when the last rune dies Jenkins crumbles to ash — “I told you he wasn’t really here.” He was only ever a puppet. The real enemy has been hiding behind him the entire campaign.

Then TBD touches an illuminated door, and Father ITYS appears to narrate the whole origin: two orphaned brothers, Terry and his younger brother Mahonri Teri Ringer, their parents taken by the void; the jealous younger brother murdering Terry in a chasm of doorways; demons and arcanists in the service of Gog latching onto him; and Father ITYS taking the possessed boy in — under Selûne’s instruction — to keep him close and glean the underworld’s plans across a hundred years. That boy is Nadei. Father ITYS restores the battered party — “You have to stop him” — and the portal spits them out at Lashara’s Workshop, where the century-old founder Lashara turns to greet them just as a blade punches through her chest from behind and a voice says Finally. Nadei sheds every stolen face he’s collected until he is only Legion, and initiative is rolled on the worst possible night.

🎙️ Notable Moments

00:04:14 — Recapping the finals, Jesse reworks Basil's healing feat into a tiered ability — and the table has to name it. Xeros supplies the catch.

Xeros: What he didn’t tell you is that you actually have to touch them with your feet. GM (Jesse): Slip off the boots. This is the Throwing On of Hands. Basil: Why do I have to touch with my foot, though? Xeros: ‘Cause they’re lucky. ‘Cause it’s a feet.

02:35:14 — The villain drops the single most iconic line in the campaign so far. Steve immediately drops the tone through the floor.

GM (Jesse) as Nadei: He looks at all of you, and he says: we are Legion. Nortle: And we are many! …Oh, I thought he was going to say “what’s my name?” GM (Jesse): You have three guesses. Say my name. Nortle: Beetlejuice? Beetlejuice! Beetlejus—!
