Honorary Diploma — Ch 3.10
Six months, ten sessions, and one impossible boss all come down to this: a fractured portal, a dying founder, and a villain who’s spent a hundred years learning how to slip every shield ever raised against him. Four not-quite-students who broke every rule of the School are the only wild cards left on the board — and the goddess who put them there isn’t saying why. Can a Tiefling bard, a Tortle monk, a Goliath wizard, and a katana-swinging Harengon actually close the tear before the world spills through it? Class is dismissed. Time to graduate.

Synopsis
The finale opens mid-swing. Two sessions after the party cut down Mutatio and cracked open the portal, they’re still trading blows with Legion — the amalgamation of harvested souls wearing the face of the stylist Nadei, secretly Mahonri Teri Ringer — the brother of Terry himself. He is stronger than anything four level-4 heroes should face, but the ground is rigged in their favor: he can only be beaten inside a Hallow spell he spent a hundred years learning to circumvent. Xeros opens with Shatter; Basil slams a Wall of Force dome around Legion and puts him in “timeout”; Foulclaw, finally free of the Suggestion that made him slice his friends’ tattoos, rejoins the line as TBD keeps a Witch Bolt locked on the portal doors.
Blow by blow, Legion sheds his body — physical form thinning to spirit until Xeros drives a Moon-touched Rapier into what’s left of his chest. He severs the way a veil tear does, splitting into a million glass fragments and detonating into light; his henchmen — dubbed the “Wraiths Against the Machine” — scatter into the Hallow dome and burn up like moths on a zapper. Into that fading light walks Nico, the teacher who once punched the party into shape, revealed as a celestial Shard of Selûne who can pass through the dome because a shard, like a moon-touched blade, cuts anything. She confirms the whole con: Selûne foresaw that these four “wild cards” and Foulclaw were the only ones who could end Legion here, so the Shards let events unfold rather than tip their hand.
The cost lands hard. Lashara — over two hundred, the last founder standing — dies on the arena floor with her final words, “this is the end of The Lashïngs,” after Xeros finally (comically, via Nico’s steadying hand) gets himself into her will and nominates Nortle as her successor. She reappears alongside Father ITYS and Old Man Jenkins as transcendent saints — pointedly without Jock Bjørn or the Aarakocra, hinting they yet live. Then Nico teleports everyone to the Meganacle, mid-commencement: the rule-breakers are graduating from the School of ITYS whether they earned it or not. Honorary diplomas, a Tear of Selûne for each of them, a valedictorian sermon from Foulclaw, and a rival dragged off in chains close out six months of Trinity — with a Shard’s promise that they’ll be needed again.
🎵 Song Recap (rhyming — drop into an AI song generator)
Scheme: AABB verses + chorus. Suggested vibe: triumphant gospel-rock graduation anthem with a pipe-organ swell.
(Verse 1) A hundred years he studied every shield and every ward, But he never read the rulebook on a bunny with a sword; Trap him in a dome, keep the Witch Bolt on the door — The soul-collector’s running out of bodies to restore.
(Chorus) Praise Selûne! (Praise Selûne!) — the moonlight cuts him clean, A blade of glass, a bursting star, the brightest you’ve e’er seen; They flunked the class, they broke the rules, they set the whole board free — Roll the tassel, take the scroll — it’s an honorary degree!
(Verse 2) The old gnome falls, the last one standing gone, Three saints in silver light, and the fight goes marching on; A teacher through the dome who was a Shard the whole while — “You were the wild card, child” — with that unbearable smile.
(Verse 3) Pomp and circumstance and a tambourine nat-19, A tux beneath the robe, the tackiest they’ve seen; “You can’t spell ornery without a little sin,” The guards grab poor old Morty as the credits fade in.
(Outro) Honorary Diploma — you don’t need to have read a word, When the goddess picks the students, the rules are just a blur.
📋 Point-by-point breakdown (player catch-up — everything that happened)
00:00:00· 🎭 RP — Cold open of finale nerves and endless mic-checks; Jesse warns “if we don’t laugh, we should be fine,” and the table immediately fails.00:10:33· 📖 Lore — Jesse welcomes everyone back to the boardroom for the (supposed) final session of Chapter 3 — six months and ten episodes of DMing — and needles TBD for begging to “go back to the library,” striking his character dead for the request.00:13:13· 📖 Recap — Two sessions ago the party killed Mutatio (who was sacrificing Foulclaws to power the portal), opened it after a celestial vision with Father ITYS, and learned the villain is Legion — an amalgamation of harvested souls, stage-name Nadei, revealed as Mahonri Teri Ringer, the brother of Terry.00:20:51· ⚔️ Combat — Combat resumes at the top of the order; Xeros hands Bardic Inspiration to Basil and casts Shatter behind Legion to knock him toward the party without an opportunity attack.00:23:35· 🎲 Mechanic — Shatter lands for 26 damage; Legion tries a “contort” reaction but the party’s defaced tattoos mean he no longer has full puppet-control over them.00:26:00· ⚔️ Combat — Legion burns Innate Sorcery and Chill Touch, grabbing Basil by the throat — “you’re so close and so cute.”00:28:33· 🎲 Mechanic — Basil answers with a Wall of Force reaction, encasing Legion in a 10-foot dome and shoving him back — “he’s in timeout.”00:33:08· 🎭 RP — The Suggestion on Foulclaw completes; freed of the compulsion, he returns the moon-touched rapier and turns his attacks back on Legion.00:43:20· ⚔️ Combat — The party works the gates of the portal (each gate anchored by a pinion), splitting fire between Legion and the structure.00:55:50· 📖 Lore — Legion shreds Basil’s shield: the only reason he can, Jesse explains, is the hundred years he spent researching the Hallow spell to beat every other ward — but the Hallow is the one thing built to keep him out.01:30:56· 🎲 Mechanic — Under the Hallow, teleportation is throttled (Misty Step drops from 30 ft to 15) and Legion’s ranged voodoo magic is suppressed — forcing him into melee where the party wants him.01:54:13· ⚔️ Combat — Basil leaps over the portal door and slams her katana down into Nadei’s face.02:09:06· 📖 Lore — Reminder that when Legion first came through the portal he stabbed Lashara, who’s been bleeding out in the center of the ring the entire fight.02:20:47· 📖 Lore — Each hit peels away Legion’s physical shell; he shifts from a body of shifting shapes into pure ghost/spirit.02:26:44· ⚔️ Combat — Xeros hits with the Moon-touched Rapier for a maxed 11; Jesse hands him the kill and lets him narrate it.02:28:34· ⚔️ Combat — Xeros severs Legion like a veil tear; the villain shatters into a million glass shards and a growing light explodes, obliterating him.02:29:33· ⚔️ Combat — The “Wraiths Against the Machine” are flung into the Hallow dome and burned to nothing; lighter spirits pass through and scatter free.02:30:26· 🎲 Mechanic — Legion is defeated. Jesse admits Legion “rolled so poorly” his paralyze-and-turn-on-each-other plan never fired.02:31:48· 📖 Lore — Nico walks through the Hallow dome in her celestial Shard of Selûne form — the teacher who trained the party — because shards, like moon-touched blades, cut through anything.02:36:00· 🎭 RP — Nico steadies Xeros’s arm as he tries to slap-heal Lashara; the accidental contact somehow lands him in Lashara’s will — the running joke he’s chased since Chapter 1.02:38:36· 🎭 RP — Lashara’s last words: “this is the end of The Lashïngs.” Xeros steps back and nominates Nortle as the new leader of The Lashïngs; she raises a hand and dies.02:41:12· 📖 Lore — Father ITYS, Old Man Jenkins, and Lashara appear as transcendent “Force-ghost” saints — but Jock Bjørn and the Aarakocra are absent, implying they may still be alive.02:45:23· 📖 Lore — Nico reveals the plan: Selûne foresaw that the four PCs and Foulclaw were the wild cards who could beat Legion only inside the Hallow; the Shards deliberately did not interfere.02:48:42· 🧭 Travel — Joining hands, the party is teleported to the Meganacle, arriving mid-commencement ceremony of the School of ITYS, robed and capped.02:49:51· 🎭 RP — Rival student Morty is stunned they’re graduating (“you literally didn’t obey one rule of the school”); his tiefling friend has miraculously become an honor student on stage with valedictorian Foulclaw.02:54:06· 🎲 Mechanic — The four musicians try to jam over the commencement track and all whiff — until non-musician Basil rolls a nat-19 on tambourine and steals the entire show.02:55:07· 🎭 RP — Xeros accepts his honorary diploma in a several-thousand-gold tux under his robe; Nortle toasts it: “you can’t spell ornery without hoe.”02:56:26· 🎒 Items — Basil receives a certification (she never finished the program) plus a Tear of Selûne crystal; each PC’s House amulet lights up and socket-fits the stone like the Eye of Agamotto.03:04:31· 🎭 RP — Valedictorian Foulclaw — alive and no longer bleeding out — delivers a sermon on light and shadow as stewardship: the world isn’t saved by one force conquering the other, and “the evil we fear out there is no stranger to the evil we wrestle with within.”03:09:04· 🎭 RP — As Morty finally gets his own hard-won diploma, Church guards cry “that’s the guy,” seize him, and drag him off — Morty howling “You! You!” at the party.03:10:48· 📖 Lore — Nico rejoins them one last time: “we have need of your abilities… this fight is not over,” and takes one of Basil’s Span Quills to stay in touch.03:12:43· 🎭 RP — Foulclaw tosses his gold PhD-grade diploma aside to hug the party, shows the party his span-scribed messages from LaDonna (with the location of her next show), and says: “let’s get the fuck out of here.” Chapter 3 concludes.

🎙️ Notable Moments
00:11:43— Chris, addicted to lore, asks if the party can pop back to the unexplored library rooms mid-boss-fight. Jesse has heard enough.TBD: Can we go back to the library real quick and check out all the rooms we never went into and discuss the intricacies and the lore behind ITYS? GM (Jesse): So your character, just because you asked that question, TBD — is struck dead. TBD: No! GM (Jesse): Any hint of another session — gone. You’re out of here. That was probably the worst request.
02:27:29— Legion is on one knee, breaking into pieces, and Jesse hands Xeros the killing blow and the mic to narrate it.Xeros: I take out the Moon-touched Rapier and swing under — it goes right into what’s left of his chest. Xeros: As the blade enters, this shining light cuts all the way through — everywhere he has an opening, all of this light just pours out. Xeros: And he shatters into a million pieces, like glass flying all over the room. GM (Jesse): You’ve severed him — the same way the veil tears happen — and the light grows and grows until it explodes.
02:32:36— A figure walks straight through the "impenetrable" Hallow dome. It's Nico, their old combat teacher, glowing like a celestial. The party does the math.GM (Jesse): She walks right through the dome, through the Hallow spell. TBD: What?! This whole time you could have helped us? GM (Jesse): Not exactly — she’s a Shard, and shards are moon-touched, like your blades. They cut through anything. Xeros: You’re about sixty seconds late.
02:38:49— Lashara is dying and about to speak her last words. The table, deep in a running vendetta with the gnome since session zero, has one suggestion.GM (Jesse): She looks at all of you and says: thank you. This is the end of The Lashïngs. Nortle: Punch her! Basil: Punch her! GM (Jesse): Nico thwarts your efforts again. Xeros: This is your final revenge from session zero — you’re disbanding the Lashïngs by killing Lashara.
02:45:23— Nico finally explains why four rule-breaking rejects were the only ones who could win. Steve connects the theology.GM (Nico): We could not defeat Legion outside of this Hallow spell — only here was he weak enough. Selûne chose you to be part of this fight, so the Shards did not interfere. TBD: They needed four fools to come in… GM (Jesse): They needed a wild card to change the game. Nortle: Wow. That actually makes so much more sense.
02:47:01— Mid-revelation, Steve notices Xeros is holding a snack with unusual reverence.Nortle: There are some theological implications to this. Are you praying with the Dorito? GM (Jesse): Where did you even get that? Nortle: Is it a communion wafer? GM (Jesse): Xeros has had snacks this whole time.
02:54:13— All four musicians roll to jam over the commencement song. The three actual performers whiff. The one non-musician does not.GM (Jesse): None of you rolled above 15 — what’d you get? Basil: I rolled a 19. GM (Jesse): So this song is mostly… tambourine. Tambourines all over the commencement track. Xeros: The one person who’s not a musician steals the show. Good job, Basil.
02:55:07— Xeros accepts his diploma. Nortle finds the perfect toast for a degree nobody actually earned — the episode's namesake.GM (Jesse): Here’s your diploma. Xeros: It’s an honorary diploma, you know… Nortle: You can’t spell “ornery” without “hoe,” am I right? Xeros: Hell yeah! Basil: What in the influence is going on here?
03:07:15— Valedictorian Foulclaw, alive and reunited with his friends, turns his graduation speech into a sermon on carrying your own darkness.GM (Foulclaw): All my life I thought light was only good and darkness only evil — Selûne above and Shar below, forever at war. GM (Foulclaw): But the world is not saved by one force conquering another. It is held together by the tension between them. GM (Foulclaw): We do not remove our corruption; we learn to carry it, to live in spite of it — and sometimes to learn from it. GM (Jesse): …This is his church talk, by the way, if you didn’t pick up on it.
03:09:37— Morty finally receives the diploma he's worked years for. It does not last long.GM (Church guards): Wait — that’s the guy! GM (Jesse): The guards seize Morty and pry the diploma out of his hands — “we have standards at this university.” GM (Jesse): They carry him off, and he looks back at all of you and goes: You! You! Xeros: Tieflings love a bad guy, my friend.

Cliffhanger
Legion is glass on the arena floor, the portal is held, and four rule-breakers walk away with honorary diplomas and a Tear of Selûne apiece. But Nico — a Shard of Selûne — takes a Span Quill and leaves them a warning: “we have need of your abilities. This fight is not over.” Morty is in Church chains screaming their names, Jock Bjørn is conspicuously not among the dead, and Foulclaw has a scroll of messages from LaDonna and one idea for the night: let’s get out of here. Chapter 3 is done — but the tassel’s barely been turned.
