The band that saved the world got scattered to the four winds — one portal, four exits, six long months. Basil wakes up with no hands and a fresh coat of black. Foulclaw inherits a library nobody can spell. TBD walks a frozen road paved in blood. And Nortle pinballs home to a deadbeat dad and two dozen siblings he never knew he had. Their friend is gone, the sky keeps threatening to bleed, and not one of them knows the others are still breathing. Handless and hunted, Basil throws herself on the mercy of the kindest woman in a city that executes people like her — and that woman just pulled a lever and opened a staircase into the dark. What waits at the bottom of the stairs — and why does the whole city insist there is only one white hare in it?

Synopsis

Six months ago a portal tore the party apart and scattered them across Kaethos, stripped of their gear and each other — and new DM Dave opens the finale by promising to bounce through that gap out of order, one lonely spotlight at a time. He starts with Basil, dyed black and handless (her hands went through the portal “in Xeros’s pants”), stranded atop the purple-burning Emberspire and hunted by the three feral Beatrix-Potter bunnies who nearly killed her back in her one-shot days — now grown huge, black-toothed, and pumped full of Veil Powder. She bounds up the tower on her Boots of Leaping (two pursuers helpfully roll nat 1s and splatter), discovers her lost hands have been rebuilt as artificed, throwable gauntlets she christens the Fist of Fightus, races the last brother to a teleport circle whose wizards are being cut down around her, and is hauled clear at the last second by a Nortle who’s tracked his black-dyed sister for months — before Dave freezes the frame and rewinds.

From there the session braids three more solo threads. Foulclaw wakes in Owlin heaven: a hundred-foot library his murdered parents Willowwatch Foulwing and Echo Frostclaw secretly built for him inside the orc fortress of Maporphis — the FOWLE Library (F-O-W-L, which is exactly why nobody visits) — where scholars Urgash Bloodroot and Dean Morvath crown him the “Heir of Foul,” a nat-20 sermon converts 94% of the half-orc student body, and a whole town bows chanting “Dixi Vobis Ita” — I told you so. In the study beneath a statue of his family, the one imperfection — an amulet, a Tear of Selûne bearing the School of Exploration signet where Sorcery should be — presses inward and opens a hidden room of Pearls of Fate, Pearls of Lore, and a “True Union” of his parents and himself. Then Dave slams the tone: TBD lands in a miles-long highway of drained pilgrim blood on the frozen shelf south of Bjornsend, gets hoisted by his cape by Kythe of Rakdos — a blood-caked, Veil-Stained Leonin sent by the witch Camilla, who murdered his dead wife Lilith’s sister — who brands him “Lilith’s little pet… you that fractured our coven… memory thief, fraud of the waste,” and is stayed from killing him only because The Ekalian says it isn’t time. He chants “Caelum Rubescat,” the sky reddens, and he vanishes into the mist; TBD limps to Bjornsend, meets Viking treasure-hunter Heth the Bold, learns his great-grandfather was Forgotten-Hour hero Jock Bjorn, and spots his lost Piece of Axe in a stranger’s hands onstage.

Nortle’s road home is pure chaos and heartbreak. His stoner Napoleon-Dynamite sensei Rex won’t unlock the gate until he finishes his overdue Rex Kwan-Do training, so Nortle chases down the panda Otis for his stolen Stick Chops, then trips into his flaky tortle father “Dick” and a marching clutch of ~24 half-siblings Dave names on the fly. At The Souks in Dacca, mid-haggle over a rare shiny tarot card, the The Imp Ending Doom 2 swarm descends and hacks the family apart, beating them to death with tambourines and triangles; Nortle corrals three siblings clear — including the limbless youngest, Skortle — makes a monk’s Wisdom save to sever his worldly attachments, and coldly lets Dad die (“nah, he’s a dick”) as the imps pummel him until his shell splits. The three survivors ride out five days in the sorcery-sealed Hot Dome at Rex’s dojo. Which drops us right back where we started — Basil freshly through the portal into the dye-ponds of Tessavar, an industrial vassal of the “black box” state Lycoris, throwing herself on the mercy of the kindest woman in a city that executes the handless: MaiMai, of MaiMai Apothecary and Dyes. Basil panics and chokes her out, botches the getaway, and — improbably forgiven and hired on the spot — is led to a lever that lifts a spiral staircase out of the floorboards. Cliffhanger

The band is still in four pieces — Foulclaw crowned in his empty library, TBD walking a blood-road under a monster’s borrowed patience, Nortle burning off the last of his worldly attachments, and none of them knowing the others live. And Basil — handless, hunted, and against all odds taken in by MaiMai — is led to a handle in the wall. MaiMai pulls it; the floorboards slide apart, a spiral staircase rises out of the dark, and she quiets the shop and walks Basil down into a silence the paper walls can’t reach. The kindest woman in a city that kills the afflicted has just insisted there is only one white hare known in all of Tessavar — and now she is leading that hare underground. Dave: “Welcome to Chapter 5.” What’s at the bottom of the stairs is where the finale begins.
